Spoke in the debate on detention without trial. Against the Government. Another black mark next to my name. But honestly, you can’t go ripping up habeas corpus just because of Osama Bin Laden. Especially not because of Osama Bin Laden. You can’t lock people up without a trial. We’re talking about introducing a dangerous precedent to deal with an estimated fifty people (who are fanatical enough to blow up their fellow citizens) out of our population of sixty million. Yes, of course we have to deal firmly with suspected terrorists. But not by trampling on our human rights. The Government wants to derogate from Article 5 of the Human Rights Act (1998). Sat in the Chamber for nine hours just to get my five minutes’ worth of outrage on the record. Left Parliament some time after midnight.
